Becoming

A documentary film by Isabel Vaca

THE STORY

Bryan, an eleven-year-old boy, dreams of meeting his father who left to the U.S. and never came back. While his mother works hard to pay for his education, he wants to drop out of school to become a cowboy just like the rest of the men in his family.

SYNOPSIS

Bryan lives in a small town in Mexico and he is about to turn eleven. Before he was born, his dad left to the United States with the promise of a better life for the family, but he never came back. Betty, his mother, works in the city as a housemaid to support Bryan’s studies, and she only gets to see him on weekends.

Bryan’s family, The Cortez, is a fourth-generation breeder of fighting bulls. Just like them, Bryan is determined to follow this long-standing tradition that is about to disappear. Bryan’s mother wants him to keep studying and leave life at the ranch, but Bryan has a hard time understanding what the world has to offer beyond the fences of the animals’ pen.

Becoming is a coming-of-age story about a boy who is trying to become a man in a male-dominated society and without a paternal figure to guide him along the way. At the end of this school year, Bryan must choose between working in the countryside or continue studying, while waiting for a father that will probably never return.
